Seek Wisdom

When I was in my early 20s I had the idea to study the Book of Proverbs to gain wisdom. For a few weeks I immersed myself in it. Looking back it was probably one of the best investments of time I have ever made.

The 3rd Chapter of Proverbs says, “Blessed are those who find wisdom, and those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.” (Proverbs 3:13-18).

Wow! Long life. Peace. Material success. Aren’t these the things that are universally sought after? This is not a get rich scheme. Seeking wisdom is a life-long path. But, when you look back in time (in my case that is over four decades) you see the truth in this scripture. No… you won’t be the richest person in the world, and your life will not be without it challenges, but in the overall scheme of things you will be able to look back and see the multitude of blessings and the protections have have occurred along the way.

In investing, it is always good to start when you are young because of the magic of compound interest. So too with seeking wisdom. Mistakes that have lifelong consequences can be avoided. Blessings multiply one on top of the other. Worthy goals are set at an early enough age to be able to attain them even if there are setbacks. But even if you are not young, it is never too late to start.

Proverbs tells us in chapter 1, verse 7 that reverence for God is the beginning of wisdom. It all starts there with acknowledging God as the creator who knows best how to guide our steps… “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
